Mangalore: Bala Prathibha childrens festival opens

MANGALORE, December 14, 2008: The two day Bala Prathibha childrens festival organized by the Raga Taranga of the city opened on Saturday with a call to encourage children to hone their talents in portraying culture. This call was given by Mrs. Hemavathi Heggade of Dharmasthala. She inaugurated the festival.She said children are the best ambassadors of culture, music and art of the land as they practice them honestly and without any reservations. They should be given enough faculties to practice them in the traditional methods she added. On this occasion she honoured two children for their contribution to Indian culture namely Shalmali Ghate and Siddartha Mallya. Two others were also honoured on this occasion included Gopal Shenoy who is the founder of special school, Seva Bharathi and Chetana Balavikasa school, Founder president of the Raga Tharanga Prakash Shenoy was also felicitated. Bangalore : Here's one foot forward on the road to light. Times Foundation, in association with Narayana Nethralaya, is providing freeeye check-up and treatment to slum children at Rotary Seva Bharathi Vidyalaya, near Kengeri flyover.

Slums in Nagadevanahalli, Mariappanapalya, Ullal Upanagara, Bhuvaneshwaranagara, Golarahatti, Marutinagara, Sonnenahalli, Dupasipalya, Kengeri, Malleshwaram and Rajarajeshwari are covered by the programme.

Doctors and volunteers are conducting door-to-door campaign and children below 15 years are given free eye check-up, which include retina examination, providing spectacles and surgery.

"We have examined more than 800 children. The number might cross 1000. Patients who require surgery are given appointment and will be treated within a week,'' Dr Anant Vinekar said. Satya, 4, who's blind since birth was detected with congenital cataract and will undergo surgery in a week.
