Sewa bharati - YFS Summer Camp conducted in Bagalkote

April 23-24, 2011: Youth for Seva(YFS) in collaboration with Seva Bharathi conducted a 2 day summer camp at Government School, Bagalkot. The camp aimed to focus on engaging slum children during their summer vacation from school. Around 130 children aged between 7 and 14 attended the camp. Nearly 35 youngsters joined hands as volunteers.
Each day began with chanting of slokas. Interspersed between games and cartoon shows, were science experiments which enthralled the curious kids.  Yoga and Pranayama sessions were also conducted. Activities in the 2 day camp included Origami, the art of paper folding and craft making. Children were also taught about personal health and hygiene. The camp helped create ethical awareness among the children. This was evident as they listened to moral stories with rapt attention. A sense of patriotism was instilled in the children with the singing of patriotic songs. Meals on both days were sponsored by Seva Bharathi.
Mr. Shivanand Pujar, the principal of the school where the camp was conducted was the Chief Guest for the closing ceremony. Dr. C S Patil was also in attendance.
Prior to commencement of the camp, a full day orientation program was conducted for all volunteers by Ms. Raksha and Ms.Asha from YFS, Bangalore chapter. A total of 45 volunteers participated and upon completion of the orientation program expressed confidence to conduct such camps on their own.
What would have been another couple of days in the sun and sand for these kids turned out to be something beneficial. Not only did the camp have a significant, positive impact on the children, it provided an equally enriching experience for the volunteers.
