Over 300 children from 7 institutions take part in fun, edn activities
The Canara High School ground at Dongerkeri witnessed a unique festival for unique people at the “Vishishtarigagi Vishishta Mela,” organised by Asha Jyothi, the forum for the challenged and their parents, on Sunday.

Be it the fun activities, educative programmes or the free refreshments and food for the participants, the kids enjoyed each and every moment of the day, which was exclusively meant for them. In fact, the fest was conducted to encourage the differently abled people and to create awareness among the parents and public about the developments in treatments and about the different beneficial programmes and schemes for the differently abled.

The special day began with a procession from the Loyola Hall at St Aloysius PU College to the venue at Canara High School. Corporation Bank Chairman and Managing Director Ajai Kumar, who inaugurated the fest, opined that the differently abled people required encouragement and not sympathy.

“The society’s duty is to pave a smooth way for them to face the society. Differently abled are much closer to god. They are his favorites,” he said and extended full support from the Corporation Bank to bring the differently abled to the mainstream.

Speaking on the occasion, State Rajyotsava award winner Sabita Monis, who does not have both hands, said that differently abled people require support from others.

“The fact that we are challenged is not a curse, but instead it helps us to show what all talents we have with us,” she said.

“All the people are talented in one or the other way. Finding out that talent and giving proper encouragement on time is the most important thing,” she added.

Mayor Praveen Kumar, Zilla Panchayat President Shailaja Bhat, Innerwheel District Chairman Swarna Chitharanjan were also present during the inaugural function.

Leaders visit

State Women and Child Welfare Minister C C Patel and Assembly Deputy Speaker N Yogish Bhat have made a surprise visit to the Canara High School where the fest was going on. They also interacted with the participants and visited different stalls.

Mock drill

The Fire and Rescue Service unit of the city presented a mock drill in which the fire force personnel demonstrated how to escape if caught in a fire mishap and different methods of extinguishing fire.

Meanwhile, one fire person suffered injuries during the drill while operating an extinguisher. The top of the extinguisher, which weighs nearly two kilograms hit the fireman on his face.

Rajyotsava award winner Sabita Monis, Special Olympics winners Pramila Pinto, Dhanya Rao, Roy Pinto, Anil Mendonca and their trainers Mahesh, Lakshminarayana Upadhayaya, Narayan S, Vasanth S were felicitated on the occasion.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Seva Bharathi Trustee Dr U V Shenoy said that though the government is announcing many schemes, the institution has not received any government help and it is being run with the help from donors.

Hindu Spiritual and Service Fair draws crowd

CHENNAI: The Hindu Spiritual and Service Fair 2012, being held at the Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College Ground in Arumbakkam, is drawing huge crowds. The fair, which was inaugurated on Wednesday, received a steady stream of visitors on Thursday. According to the organisers of this sought-after annual spiritual fair of the metro, a total of 160 stalls have been put up by various spiritual and service organisations based in the south, as well as from north India.

Large concentration of visitors were seen at the stalls put up by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), Prajapita Brahmakumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidhyalaya, Sri Sathya Sai Organizations, Melmaruvathur Adiparasakthi Peedam, Sri Narayani Peetam, Vellore, Seva Bharathi and Ayya Vaikundar Narpani Sangam, Kanyakumari.

Jyotirlingas darshan, organised by Brahmakumaris, is one of the added attractions for visitors. Pictorial presentation of TTD’s growth through a topic ‘Then and now’ drew good response from youth, as they were able to see some rare photographs of the temple and its development over the years.

Stalls of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Departments of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and the Archeological Survey of India recorded a steady stream of visitors on Thursday evening.

Many spiritual organisations distributed pamphlets about the services undertaken by them, while several others showcased their works using DVD presentations. Speaking to Express after visiting the fair, Murlidhar Rao, BJP National Secretary, said, “It’s a great effort by the organisers and by seeing the crowd, it is achieving its goal — dissemination of spiritual and as well as service activities of Hindu organisations.”

Sewa Bharti Bhatinda: Voter awareness drive in slum areas of city

The aim of the drive was to make people aware about the importance of their voting rights so that on the day of the elections, people exercise their right to franchise because each voter plays a role in the building of the nation.
Sewa Bharati in association with The Bathinda Vikas Manch today organised a voter awareness drive in the slum dwelling areas with the cooperation of other organizations like the Ek Noor Welfare Society, Rahat Foundation, Suraksha Helper and the Joint Action Committee. Also involved were Organisations like the Sahara Jan Seva, Sewa Bharti and the Swami Vivekananda Study Circle also contributed to it. According to Rakesh Narula of the Bathinda Vikas Manch,
Speaking on the occasion, MM Behl said that votes must be cast without fear or favour because greed can spoil our future prospects.

In his speech, Radhey Shyam Bansal said hundred per cent voting is essential to take the nation forward on the path to progress.
Meanwhile, Bathinda Vikas Manch organised a langar at the Ajit road with the cooperation of the family of Suhagwanti Devi. This information was given by Sewaram Singla and Ramesh Kumar Singla.
On the occasion, clothes collected from the households were distributed amongst 200 people to save them from the biting cold. Among those who took part in organizing the programme were Neeraj Kumar, Krishna Kumar, Radhey Shyam Bansal, Prakash Garg and Deepali Singla.

Sewa International USA holds national conference in Chicago

Chicago, IL: Sewa Interna-tional, a nonprofit charitable Hindu-faith based organization, held its fifth national conference and workshop, at the Holiday Inn, Rolling Medows, from April 29 to May 1.

The event was inaugurated with the lightening ceremony by Consul Vishwas Sapkal and Shanti mantra chanting by Yashaswini Desai. Young volunteers sang American and Indian national anthem. Anil Deshpande welcomed the gathering.

Srikant Konda, founder president of SEWA International, introduced visiting delegates from India, Ramesh Mehta, SEWA director from Mumbai, and Shyam Prande, global coordinator from New Delhi. Ramesh Mehta is actively involved in Women’s Empowerment in Kutch, Gujarat and many other locations in India and outside.

Shyam Parande, provided an overview of Sewa Interna- tional’s involvement in the community and its growth.

Shyam Prande said there were over 165,000 projects run by Sewa and it had partnering organizations in 17 countries, including India, Nepal, Kenya, the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and Caribbean countries. Sharing stories of despair, courage, help and endurance from his tour of Northern Sri Lanka after the end of Sri Lankan military operations there, Prande said there were 90,000 orphans and 45,000 widows, who needed immediate assistance. He also revealed that Sewa would take up relief and resettlement efforts in Sri Lanka on a priority this year. Prande and his team were also helping in recent Japan earthquake relief efforts.

Dr. Sreenath, SEWA president, said about 1,000 Sewa volunteers put in more than 70,000 hours of community service in 2010. Its volunteer -driven nature and keen focus on providing services with very low administrative overheads had set Sewa apart from other non-profits.

Dr. Sreenath said Sewa or volunteerism was universal across all the faiths, promo-ting universal brotherhood (Vasudhaika kutumbkam) with holistic approach. “Volunteer-ing nature brings the community closer and also involves personal growth. Sewa volunteers across the country will plan and organize several service activities to benefit the local community on the National Sewa Day, September 11. Service events such as blood donation and food drives for local homeless shelters would be conducted in 38 cities in 22 states and 20 metro areas across the USA. A new Sewa chapter in Chicago has been set up,” he added. .

Darshan Soni, vice president of SEWA, shared his own inspirational experience and presentation to the audience. He said; “National Sewa Day, a concept initially popularized by Sewa International, UK, will involve hundreds of Indian-American engineers, physicians, professors, business people and students. Sewa volunteers include concerned Americans and second-generation Indian-American students and professionals.”

Addressing the public event organized as part of the conference, Consul Vishwas Sapkal praised Sewa volunteers for their dedication and recalled how Indian government officials sought Sewa’s help during disaster relief efforts in the past. Requesting Sewa to take up a project to help the Indian American community with their consulate needs such as PIO and OCI cards, Sapkal appreciated Sewa for helping build volunteerism in the community.

The cultural program presented on the occasion, included patriotic song by Meghana Kulkarni, bhajans, Bhutanese group dance, and performance by Avni Patel.

Gurudatt Ramamurthy and Deshpande proposed a vote of thanks.

Serving the Sick : Nana Palkar Smruti Samiti

Nana Palkar Smruti Samiti provides free accommodation and food to poor patients from out of Mumbai, Alekh Angre reports

Mumbai with its large hospitals, like Tata Memorial and KEM (King Edward Memorial) providing affordable treatment for critical diseases like cancer, attracts thousands of patients from all over the country. However, accommodation for the duration of hospitalisation for patients and the accompanying family members has been a major problem. It’s not unusual to see scores of people sleeping and cooking in the hospital premises or on pavements outside.

The situation was the same four decades ago. Nana Palkar Smruti Samiti (NPSS), founded in 1968, sought to bridge this gap. It provides free accommodation and food to the patients and their two attendees as well as transportation to hospitals.

NPSS was founded in the memory of late Nanasaheb Palkar, writer, orator and a well-known pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), who was also a social crusader with keen interest in patient-care. NPSS started with one room in Parel (mid-town Mumbai). The services of the organisation gained popularity by word of mouth and more patients started seeking the help of NPSS. So, a plot of land was granted by the then municipal commissioner.

In 1997, NPSS got approval to build a 10-storey structure. The building is known as Rugna Seva Sadan. It can accommodate 76 patients and 152 accompanying attendees. At times, there are patients who can afford nominal fees. For them, NPSS charges Rs50 per day for monthly accommodation and Rs25 per meal. “With the help of donations from the public, we strive to give accommodation and other facilities to people who are poor and traumatised by the illness,” says AM Joshi, former secretary and trustee of NPSS.

Patients are given the facilities on obtaining a certificate either from a member of the RSS or the medical social worker of the hospital from where the patient has been referred. “Since patients come from different states, a valid medical/reference certificate is essential. It is a proof that the patient is a genuine one,” explains Mr Joshi. The organisation provides free ambulance service to the patients to take them to hospitals like Tata Memorial, KEM and Sion Hospital and charges Rs5 each to the patient’s attendees.

Volunteers of NPSS distribute fruits to TB patients at Sewri Hospital every Thursday. “Since most patients are abandoned, giving them fruits and interacting with them cheers them up. We also distribute free breakfast to 200 children admitted at Wadia hospital everyday.”

NPSS also offers many other facilities. In 2004, NPSS started a dialysis centre with a nominal charge of Rs350. It has 12 haemodialysis machines treating 36 patients a day. Additionally, it also runs a low-cost pathological laboratory and provides free medicine and counselling to TB (tuberculosis) patients, among others. These services are free for poor patients; for others, a nominal fee is charged. NPSS has lithotripsy centres in Matunga (Mumbai) and Aurangabad (Maharashtra), providing treatment at Rs3,500. “The costs of such treatments are high, making it unaffordable for many. So we provide such services at nominal cost,” says Mr Joshi. NPSS gives financial assistance to poor patients undergoing treatment; for this, its monthly budget is Rs1.5 lakh. “The medical social worker of a particular hospital after verifying that the patient genuinely needs financial aid, issues a letter to him/her. Once we receive such a letter, we help the patient,” says Mr Joshi.

NPSS provides and arranges for blood donor registry and blood donation camps every year for major hospitals. It also has a branch in Borivali, where doctors provide medical care at a nominal rate. It hires out equipment like walkers, wheelchairs and water beds on low rent. You can donate to NPSS by way of money, in kind or volunteer your services. All donations are tax exempt under Section 80 (G) of the Income-Tax Act.

Nana Palkar Smruti Samiti, established in 1968, is a Non-Governmental Orgranization (NGO) dedicated to Rugna-Seva .

The Samiti has constructed a ten-storied building to provide accommodation to such patients. The Sadan has accommodation to provide for about 55 patients with two attendants each in self-contained rooms. A canteen supplies food, snacks etc at subsidized rates to the inmates. About Late Narayan Hari Palkar

Narayan Hari Alias Nana Palkar was a whole life Pracharak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and also an accomplished poet and writer. He had keen interest in tending the sick and alleviating their sufferings. After his death in March, 1967, Nana Palkar Smruti Samiti was established on 1.3.1968. The Samiti has ‘Rugna Seva is Ishwar Seva’ as its motto and started work by helping the poor and needy patients coming to Mumbai for medical treatment.

SEVA SANGAM, congregation of 50 seva organizations at Jammu

Jammu: A Seva Sangam programme was recently organized by Akhil Bharatiya Seva Bharati, Jammu & Kashmir unit in which representatives of various seva organizations throughout the country participated with enthusiasm. Around 50 organizations participated in this confluence held in the premises of Ved Mandir situated in Ambphala locality of Jammu. Five seva organizations from J&K and three from Laddakh participated in the meet.
Dignitaries such as Seva Bharati National President Sooryaprakashji Tonk, RSS Akhil Bharatiya Saha Seva Pramukh Suhasrao Hiremath, Kshetra Seva Pramukh Shreeniwasji Moorti, Jammu-Kashmir and Himachal Prant Seva Pramukh Jaidevji, Jammu-Kashmir Seva Bharati chief Ramlalji Gandotra, etc graced the occasion. The profound guidance given by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Saha Sarakaryawah Sureshji Soni was a noticeable feature of the entire event.

In the inaugural session Suhas Rao Hiremath congratulated various institutions for participating in this noble congregation and highlighted the central idea behind organizing such a huge gathering. If society remains happy, we will be happy and through this manner we can spread happiness among the society, nation and the entire world, he insisted. Representatives of various organizations gave a brief presentation about their nature of work.
In the beginning, the special exhibition organized to mark the congregation was inaugurated by Suryaprakashji Tonk, Suhasrao Hiremath and Shreeniwasji Moorti.
Seva Bharati volunteers exchanged their views and experiences in the second session. Many small seva organizations got a valuable guidance from the well-experienced organizations. After this, the representatives narrated their experiences encountered during the congregation. Mumtaz Maqbool from Kashmir and other women karyakartas sung the song ‘Itni Shakti Humein De Na Daata’ in their succulent voice that was lauded by the entire audience.

Seva Bharati National President Sooryaprakashji Tonk guided the representatives on the concluding ceremony by taking a detailed account of the presentations given by them. At the end, RSS Saha Sarakaryawah Sureshji Soni expressed his views regarding need for seva work, handing over the responsibility of seva work in the hands of new generation and inculcation of seva sanskars among youths.

Amarnath, YFS Volunteer from Wells Fargo spent 15 days interacting with the students from Chenchu tribe in Gokavaram, Dist. Kurnool.

He shares his experiences:

While going for Seva vacation I did not had anything in mind that I will do this particular thing. Spending 16 days with Chenchu kids & visiting the Chenchu Gudams has been a wonderful experience. Chenchus are freedom lovers, we can notice this even in a nursery kid. Some of them still depend on forest for their livelihood. Few Chenchus came out of forest and are cultivating, and going for other daily work while some are still in forest not willing to come out. They treat forest as their mother. I was staying in Bhaktha Kannappa Gurukulam (BKG) which is exclusively for Chenchu kids. Here they provide education, Vocational Training for the kids & then Awareness Camps, Mobile Dispensary for Chenchu villagers.
They don’t getting much support once they come out of forest. They don’t have proper daily work so they depend on forest for livelihood. This people have identity cards given by government to enter into forest to get Honey, Gum and sell it in nearby stores. They go to forest and stay there for 15 days to 1 month & take their kids with them. This is one reason why kids don’t go to schools continuously. Most of this gudams have government schools but very few kids. They also do fishing and sell it to third parties there. We have to travel inside the forest to visit some of the gudams who cultivate in forest. They have Rice along with mirchi curry as their food. It’s very very spicy & as they don’t take good food they get TB etc… Most of them pray to Lord Shiva.
Overall, I had a very wonderful experience.

Sevabharathi : Visually impaired students celebrate School Day

Mangalore: The annual (School) Day of Roman Catherine School for the Blind was observed on Wednesday here, at the school grounds in city. It was 202nd birth anniversary of Louis Braille, who invented a language by touch, for the blind persons, known as the Braille.
Speaking to the children, Canara Bank senior manager in Founder’s branch of Dongerkery, Shivananda Bhandary said that the school was no different from any other school and he could not make out that it was special for visually challenged kids.
It school had started with just 2 students, he noted, but had 28 students now. He promised all co-operations from his Bank for the progress of this unique school. He lauded the management efforts to run such a school.Principal Ms.Calistus D’Souza presented an annual report and stated that the Government had given permission to extend the school up to 10th standard, in High School. The lady principal praised Louis Braille for the script he made popular in 19th century, when things were bad for visually impaired children.

Massive relief work by Sewa VIBHAG in storm hit Thane

Gusty winds and torrential rains of Cyclone ‘Thane’ hit the coastal areas of Chennai, Cuddalore and Puducherry (UT). Several trees, street lamp posts and electric poles were uprooted causing extensive damage to the road and electrical network. The Prathamic Shiksha Varga of Puducherry Vibhag was concluded (on Saturday, December 30, 2011) one day in advance in order to carry out the relief work. Initially, RSS volunteers did field work to assess the extent of damage. Since there was complete breakdown of power supply throughout the two districts of Cuddalore and Pondy, it was ascertained that there is an urgent requirement of candles, mosquito coils, match boxes, and also drinking water.
Rescue services faced difficulty in reaching the affected areas due to damaged roads. Swayamsevaks cleared the uprooted trees and electric poles which helped the line man to attend and restore electricity immediately in some parts of Puducherry town. Mosquito coil, match boxes, candles, bread packets, water packets were distributed to 600 houses at five places of Puducherry town and to 1000 houses of the villages surrounding Villiyanur, Thirukannur, Kalapattu Panchayats of Puducherry.
In Cuddalore district, 3 kgs of rice were distributed along with candles, match boxes, mosquito coils etc. to 1200 houses of Vandipalayam and Pudupallayam villages. Councillor joined the RSS volunteers in the relief work inspite of a death of his Uncle. This act by the Councillor received appreciation from the local people. Another Ward Councillor who accompanied the swayamsevaks during relief distribution made it a point to inform the beneficiaries as follows: “These relief materials are from Swayamsevaks. Not from any other agency”. Door to door distributions of essential items were highly appreciated. 50 Swayamsevaks participated in the relief work organized under the Pondy Sanghachalak Sri Selvaraj and Secretarty Sri Guru Subramanian. Further relief work is under progress.
In North Chennai, food packets were distributed to 5 most affected fishing hamlets for 100 persons in each hamlet for two days. The Swayamsevaks who undertook this quick relief work were in fact undergoing training in a seven day camp of RSS. They attached greater importance to serve the needy and therefore were at the doors of the storm hit.

DhanvantariSewa Yatra is organized by Sewa Bharati, Purbanchal & NationalMedicos Organization (N.M.O.) jointly to help the poor and PanajatiVillagers of N.E. region. Periodical free health care camps areconducted in the remotest and Janajati Villagers by the Doctors andParamedical Voluntary Workers. So far, eight Dhanvantari Sewa Yatrashave been organized. The 8^thDhanvantari SewaYatra was organized from April 17, 2011to April 28, 2011. 37 Doctorsparticipated in this novel venture, out of which 22 Doctors were fromBHU, 6fromRajasthan, 5 from Gujarat, 3 from Madhya Pradesh & 1 from Delhi.

JAMMU: Sewa Bharti, a registered (NGO) working for under previliged in J and K State held Sewa Sangam, of around 45 NGOs of the State. NGOs from Ladakh, Kargil, Kashmir, Reasi, Udhampur, Poonch, Rajuri, participated in the function so as to discuss the strategies to exchange and expand the work of NGO’s in J and K State with co-operation of each other.
Sewa Sangam was inaugurated with traditional lighting of lamp by Chief Guest Suraj Parkash Tung, President All India Sewa Bharti. Subash Roy Hera Math and Ram Lal Gandotra President Sewa Bharti were Guests of Honour.
All the representatives of the NGO gave experiences and difficulties in day to day working, and discussed the ways and means to work in mutual understanding.
All the participants showed much concern about the deteriorating conditions of health and education sector in far flung and slum areas. Separate session was held to discuss the ways, means and strategies to overcome these problems.
An exhibition was also thrown open where various exhibits of Self Help Groups, photographs, presentations of all the 45 participating NGOs of the J and K were shown to all present in Sewa Sangam. All the participants of NGOs appreciated the initiative of Sewa Bharti for holding of Dewa Sangam.
Programme ended with the pledge that all the NGOs will work with one another for common motto to serve the suffering humanity with all love and care. Ram Lal Gandotra President Sewa Bharti J and K gave the vote of thanks.

Seva Bharathi secunderabad book distrution for rural students

Seva Bharathi distributed all-in-one books to 10th class students. The programme was organised by Chatrapati Shivaji Seva Samiti, Well wishers Foundation and Maharshi Bharadwaj Sewa samiti. The distribution programme was held in 4 schools of 4 villages; Nootankal (33), Girimapur(26), Dundigal(55), BBalanagar(40) and Srirangavaram (61) villages.

Sewa bharathi Secunderabad has been running 7 Study centers (Abhyasikas) in the above said villages. To complement and follow up the efforts the textbook distribution programme was arranged. A total of 215 sets of books were distributed.

NGOs step in to help thalassaemics at Guru Nanak hospital

AMRITSAR: Thalassaemia patients in Amritsar have to depend on non-government organizations (NGOs) to meet their expenses on medication as government hospitals have expressed their inability to do so due to lack of funds. Not only are medicines not provided to patients but the thalassaemia ward situated in the children's ward of Guru Nanak Dev Hospital is also maintained by an NGO, Amritsar Thalassaemia Welfare Society.

Thalassaemia is a genetic blood disorder in which the patient's bone marrow cannot form sufficient red cells and their survival is also reduced. Thalassemic patients have to be given blood transfusion every 15 days.

"We organize blood donation camps every now and then and give blood to the government blood bank which ensures that thalassaemic patients are at least never short of blood for transfusion," said president of the society, Satnam Singh while talking to TOI on Saturday. Satnam's son Hargun Singh is also a thalassaemic.

A visit to the thalaessemia ward of Guru Nanak Dev Hospital reveals the sorry state of affairs and the predicament of poor parents of kids suffering from the disease who not only have to depend on NGOs or the thalassaemia welfare society for medicines but also have to arrange for about Rs 1,000 every 15 days which is needed for purchase of certain material and equipment required for blood transfusion.

Sukhleen Kaur, whose son Sukhpreet Singh has been taking blood transfusion for the past nearly seven years said, "There were no facilities available to them in the government hospital," while adding that she couldn't afford medical treatment expenses in private hospitals. "Had the thalassaemia welfare society not been there for our help, things would have been worse," she said.

Anjali whose ten-year-old son Danish is also taking treatment at the thalassaemia ward in the government hospital said it was due to the efforts of the society that electric fittings were made in the room, while adding that even the flooring of the ward was done by the society. She rued that patients were not provided medicines by the government hospital.

Medical superintendent of Guru Nanak Dev Hospital Dr R P S Boparai admitted to funds scarcity with them due to which they were not able to provide medicines to thalaessemics. "Fund crunch is everywhere but we have NGOs like Society Sewa Bharti and Bhai Kanhayya Mission Society who help patients." He however said that they ensured that every thallasaemic patient got the required blood for transfusion. Satnam Singh said that the society had also begun an awareness campaign especially among girls and boys of marriageable age. Everyone getting married must undergo a medical test before to find whether he was a thalassaemic minor or carrier to avoid spread of disease.

Docs on strike open parallel OPD to help patients

The protesting junior resident doctors at the Government Medical College today set up a parallel OPD (Out Patient Department) system to see the patients who were facing problem in getting the medical services because of the strike by the doctors.
The Junior Resident Doctors Association (JRDA) on this occasion distributed free medicines to the patients. More than 250 patients were treated at the free medical camp organised by the JRDA with help from Sewa Bharti, an NGO, outside the Guru Nanak Dev hospital.
The JRDA Vice President, Vivek Tomar, said, “The patients were facing inconvenience because of the strike. We have never intended to disturb the services for the poor. We have decided to see patients while on protest.”
He added that the junior doctors are adamant to fight the battle till the end. “We would try to meet the Chief Minister tomorrow. If he accepts our demands we would called off the strike then and there.”
The JDRA in order to support of the general public also distributed eatables among the patients admitted to the Guru Nanak Dev Hospital.

Leh: 15 November, 2011 - The Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Leh Mr. Rigzin Spalbar today inaugurated a Medical Health Centre building at Solar Colony Choglamsar constructed by SEWA BHARTI Gujrat with a cost of Rs. 65 lacs.

CEC on the occasion expressed gratitude to Sewa Bharti for their generous contribution in resettling of the flood affected people through this hospital and said that such kind of noble assistance would always be welcomed.

Coming up of the building is the first step, but the real task is the practical running of the hospital with every kind of medical facilities including doctors and equipments. So to ensure efficient functioning of the centre we will have a detail discussion with the founders of the centre besides putting efforts at our own level,” said CEC. He further made it clear that the shifting of the presently running medical centre at Solar Colony in the newly constructed hospital building is the responsibility of the Panchayat and village representatives.

The delegates of Sewa Bharti demanded for the allotment of the adjoining areas of the building for the purpose of parking and other requirements. Responding to their demand CEC gave them full assurance and told them to keep no doubt about it.

EC Health, Dr. Sonam Wangchok on the occasion thanked the Sewa Bharti on behalf of the Health Deptt, Leh and expressed hope over this Medical Centre becoming a great utility centre in future for entire Leh providing all sorts of medical facilities.

Ex-CEC, LAHDC, Chhering Dorjey who was also present on the occasion congratulated the people of Solar Colony for the newly constructed Medical Centre for them and appreciated Sewa Bharti for their speedy work in completing the building in such a short time considering the dire need of the people. “If Sewa Bharti is not providing with the facilities of doctors then it is completely on the shoulders of present Council to create posts and recruit doctors and other medical staffs,” Dorjey added.

Giving detail of the works done by SEWA BHARTI Gujrat in Ladkah after last year flood, Sh. Jai Dave Singh who is the head of the SEWA BHARTI Gujrat for J&K and Himachal Pardesh said that the Hospital building was constructed at a cost of Rs. 65 lacs and the SEWA BHARTI Gujrat has collected 2.3 crore for Ladkah out of which 56 lacs have already been distributed to 934 flood effected families. The Trust constructed 64 homes in different villages of Leh for flood victims and also constructed 70 traditional waterwheel grinders (Rantak) in different villages of Leh.

Sewa Vibhag at the service of Tiruppur flood hit

First week of November witnessed torrential rains which battered the Tiruppur city, the national knitwear export centre and a District Headquarters. Low-lying areas and dwellings got marooned as the Noyyal River entered the town causing flood. Nearly 15000 people were rendered homeless. Sewa vibhag - RSS volunteers along with other Hindu organizations immediately plunged into relief action. They rescued the children, ladies and aged people from the flood and were safely sheltered in the nearby schools. Toothpowder, milk, bread, tea, water packets etc. were initially supplied to them. 600 rubber sheets, buckets, biscuits were also supplied. Food packets for around 6000 persons were distributed by the Sewa Vibhag volunteers. Ready Selfless Service by the RSS volunteers were well appreciated by the locals.

Jana Kalyan Trust is a registered trust formed for the welfare of the needy and poor people of North East. Presently we are running two Driving Training School, in Guwahati and Tezpur, Assam and two Sewing Training School in Guwahati, Agia Assam. Both of our projects running smoothly and proved effective tool in the economic development of needy and poor people.

Jana Kalyan Trust is running a Sewing Training School at Lal Ganesh, Guwahati since August 2010. Majority of the trainees are female. During the last 14 months 68 (3 belongs to ST) trainees admitted, Females with low education and low income group availing a facility to learn a skill of sewing cloths through this project.

We are getting ` 250/- per month per trainee as course fees, which is very reasonable as compared to other private sewing training schools in Guwahati. After completing a course of 3 months trainee can earn enough money using their skill.There is lack of educational facilities in remote rural areas, youth are having low education, so they could not get an employment. They need some technical skills which can give them opportunities to earn their own livelihood. We have started a Residential Driving Training School at Guwahati in Sept 2010, which is running smoothly.

Till now more than 250 persons have been trained. which is useful them for earning their own livelihood.No residential facility is available in any driving school in towns where they can stay and take training of technical skills like Driving etc. To remove this critical hurdle we have tried to provide residential facility for our trainees at a minimum cost which is ` 2100/- for 15 days training course. (Driving Training Fee `1500/- + Food & lodging for 15 days ` 600/-)Driving training and practice is given twice a day(morning and evening) 15 days are sufficient to learn smooth driving.We had an initial investment of ` 1,00,000/- to setup the project. We managed the recurring expenses by the fees amount collected from trainees.We are trying to spread our activities in other part of North East.

Sewabharti: Dengue grips Gurdaspur district 3 confirmed, 51 suspected cases in hospitals

Barely three months after the Gurdaspur district health authorities organised the Anti-Dengue Month, had the dreaded disease slowly made its way into the district. As many as three confirmed and 51 suspected cases have been reported from various places in the district.
The confirmed cases are from Batala, Naushera Majha Singh and Gharota, while the 51 suspected cases are from different part of the district. All the three confirmed cases have been shifted to the DMC, Ludhiana, and Fortis Hospital, Amritsar.
The authorities have set up a special ward where patients are being kept in isolation.
There were rumours that the patients were forced to buy free medicines from outside the government-run hospital. However, these rumours were quickly scotched by the Civil Surgeon Dr Chandanjit Singh who said he had written a letter to the officials of his department to keep ready adequate stocks of medicine.
Dr Adesh Jot Kaur, District Epidemiologist, said the IG Macelisa test-the most reliable test to determine dengue fever-was being conducted on patients. The facility of the IG Macelisa test is available at 10 government hospitals across the state and the local Civil Hospital, here, is one of them.
Most of the cases in the town have been reported from the Geeta Bhawan road area where rotting garbage dumps are a normal sight. “We have urged the Municipal Council to clear the garbage piles to ensure the situation does not aggravate,” said the Civil Surgeon.
Interestingly, during the Anti-Dengue month organised by the health authorities in July this year, seminars were held in urban and rural schools where the students were educated about the causes of the disease. However, these seminars, organised at the tax payer’s money, seemed to hold little or no water as the disease has finally knocked the doors of the residents.

Good Samaritans have stepped in to save the day for the health authorities. An NGO, Sewa Bharti, has stepped in to provide free transportation to the patients who have to be sent to far away hospitals for specialised treatment. Another local dentist, Dr Vikram Gandotra, too, will be bearing the transportation charges.

The District Health Officer Dr HS Kochar said special entomological teams have been formed to spray disinfectants in the affected parts of the town, including the Geeta Bhawan road area.
Sensing the gravity of the situation, the Municipal Council has started de-clogging drains in and around the Geeta Bhawan road.

Seva bharathi's master trainers at Handicraft Training for rural tribal women

TEZU, Sep 25: The Seva Bharati, Arunachal in association with local based NGO- Amik Matai Society, Tezu kicked off its rural initiative in imparting week long Handicraft Training in Changliang village under Tezu circle of Lohit today.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by the District Art and Culture Officer, Anjaw along with PR representatives of the village and the members of the collaborating NGOs. The chief guest cited the success story of the “Barbie Doll” which had a small beginning initially. 30 Women participants from the adjoining villages such as Duraliang, Hydel camp, PCL colony and Tezu are availing the handicraft training which is aimed at generating self employment for the rural tribal women. Training is being imparted in Fabric painting, flower making, soft toys, embroidery rings among others.

The training is being facilitated by the Master trainers from Seva Bharati, Joy Kumar Sharma and Gajen Das from Guwahati along with the Volunteers of Amik Matai Society.

Earlier such training was imparted in the rural areas of Along. The organisation aims to reach the remotest of rural areas of Arunachal to impart such trainings in future with the support of local based organisations.

Help ameliorate sufferings of deprived people —Swami Satyamitranand Giri

"Service to deprived people is truly service to God. It is the embodiment of yajna, charity and sacrifice. Every person should attain punya by rendering service to the needy. The path of selfless service is very difficult because one has to give up one’s own interests while rendering service,” said noted saint and founder of Bharatmata Mandir Haridwar Swami Satyamitranand Giri while speaking at the concluding ceremony of three-day Sewa Sangam organised in Haridwar from October 1 to 3. About 900 delegates from 65 districts of Uttarakhand and Western Uttar Pradesh presented details about their service activities at the Sangam. A total of 72 service organisations represented at the Sewa Sangam.

During the Sewa Sangam, several persons who are rendering exemplary service in various fields were felicitated. Those who were honoured included Dr Harpal from Chamoli, Shri Vachan Singh from Tehari Garhwal, Smt Kalawati from Chamoli, Shri Bachan Singh Khatri from Dasjulakandai, Shri Mahak Singh from Bulandshahar, Shri Vedprakash from Muzaffarnagar, Shri Lokesh from Hathras and Shri Alok from Aligarh.

Swami Satyamitranand Giri called upon the people dedicated to the cause of service to root out the sufferings and pain of the deprived people of the society.

Shankaracharya Swami Vasudevanand Saraswati said service and sacrifice are the born ideals of Bharat. Service to the deprived section of the society has been an integral part of our culture. We should carry on this task to make the whole Hindu society literate, healthy, safe and prosper. He said the concept of ‘service to man service to God’ is being materialised successfully by the Sewa Bharati all over the country. But at the same time he warned that the Christian missionaries are conspiring against Hindusim through selfish service and they are trying to weaken the integrity of the nation. “They are trying to separate the weaker section of the Hindu society from the mainstream of Hindusim. We need to be aware of their conspiracy. We can safeguard the Hindu culture only through social service,” he added.

Senior Sangh Pracharak Shri Madhubhai Kulkarni said the whole atmosphere of Haridwar is full of the feelings of selfless service and is an inspiration for sacrifice and selfless service. “Devotion to God inspires men to serve the helpless and the deprived people. Enlightenment is essential for selfless service and we need to improve our manners and behaviour while serving people. Every able Hindu must take care of very Hindu who is deprived of basic amenities,” he said.

Akhil Bharatiya Sewa Pramukh Shri Sitaram Kedilaya said our society is our idol, which we worship by conducting social service. “Social service for us is a sacred vow. Social service to attain this must be conducted with humility,” he said.

Earlier, inaugurating an exhibition organised at the Sewa Sangam editor of Panchjanya Shri Baldevbhai Sharma said some anti-national forces are active in the country and in the name of service they are misguiding the deprived people of the Hindu society. He hoped that the whole picture of the country would change due to the activities of Sewa Bharati.

Swami Kailashanand Brahamchari, Dakshin Kali Pithadhishwar, said there is no big dharma than the service. He said the dedicated workers of Sewa Bharati are doing exemplary service. Seva bharathi AP Conducts Blood donation camp

Hyderabad: Seva bharathi AP in association with the Indian Red Cross has Conducted a Blood donation camp at its office in Nimboliadda on Oct 1st. The Camp was inaugurated by the President of Seva bharathi Western AP Dr Janardhan Gowd. Dr Gowd stressed the need for blood donation on the National Blood donation day in particular and every three months in general. He said it should be as normal and part of ones routine.
There were 27 blood donations, on the day despite the transportation strike.

Fremont: Sewa USA is releasing $10,000 towards Sikkim Earthquake Relief efforts as volunteers from Sewa's sister organizations in India have started relief operations in severely damaged Northern Sikkim.

President of Sewa International USA, Professor Sree Sreenath, said that 52 volunteers from Sewa Bharati have reached the places worst affected by the earthquake.
Three teams of Sewa volunteers have setup a base in Chungthang in Northern Sikkim. One more rescue team with relief van carrying blankets, drinking water, grains, oil, cookies (biscuits) and other essentials is on its way.

The relief work is presently being coordinated from Siliguri in North Bengal, India. There have been 20 landslides that have caused terrible damages, roads are blocked and travelling has become difficult.

Sewa volunteers have built up a great reputation for providing relief to disaster victims. The 2004 Tsunami in the Indian Ocean, Hurricane Katrina in the US in 2005 and the 2009 Andhra-Karnataka floods in India are a few recent examples of the effective relief operations Sewa International managed.

UPDATE: The Death toll is 82 and counting.
Loss of property: 15,000 houses collapsed while 100,000 badly hit

Nature has struck again, this time in Sikkimand the ground has shaken literally. Sikkim hit by an earthquake of 6.8in magnitude killing 82 precious lives. Out of the 82 deaths, 68 are in India, including 53 in Sikkim. Theree peopel are confirmed dead in Bihar and 12 in West Bengal, seven each are dead in Nepal and Tibet respectively.

More than 100 people arrived at Siliguri district hospital and 30 were admitted. “The tremors were felt in Delhi, West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, North East and Nepal. Around 200 people have been brought to the ITBP relief camp in Gangtok, Ranjit Sinha, DG ITBP, said. Coupled by the incessant rains that hit the highways and landslides that deteriorated the situation sikkim needs all the help NOW.

Seva Bharati opens a Home for Orphanage children opened in Nagapattinam, TN.

A three-storey home for children was inaugurated under the aegis of the Seva Bharati, a non-governmental organisation, here on Thursday

The orphanage christened Guruji Anbu Illam has been constructed at a cost of Rs.1.10 crore funded by the Gujarat Government.

Inaugurating the home, Collector T. Munusamy lauded the works taken up by the Seva Bharati in the reconstruction efforts in the aftermath of the tsunami here in the district. The organisation has constructed 863 tsunami shelters in the district, and has also been engaged in the conduct of medial camps, mobile libraries, and computer training progammes.

The home would provide shelter for children orphaned by the tsunami and also the orphaned children found in villages of the district.

The occasion was attended by Muralidhara Rao, National Secretary, Bharatiya Janata Party among others.

At present, Sevabharathi runs six Anbu Illams for girls, five for boys and one for infants. Sevabharathi Tamilnadu provides shelter and care for needy children. These centres are called as Anbu Illams Abodes of Love and not as orphanages. Any visitor would be astonished to find that an Anbu Illam is only a big family and not a hostel or an orphanage. Flood Havoc in Orissa: Appeal for support

Odisha or Orissa, lying in the eastern part of India has always been susceptible to natural calamities like flood, drought, cyclone. Just as the state was recovering from the great floods of 2008, it has again been hit by floods which has caused even more destruction this time around. More than half the state has been affected by floods. Over 2 million people have been affected. Official death toll as of today stands at 19. Many people have drowned and many have been swept away. Those who are alive have lost everything and have taken shelter on places like national highway. According to official reports 3,505 villages in 19 of the 30 districts have been affected and at least 21,816 houses have been damaged. But the worse is yet to come as the fear of epidemic breaking out looms large. If you just search for 'Orissa floods 2011' on Google you'll be able to understand the amount of destruction that has taken place. At least 24,429 houses have been damaged.

The water level in other major rivers likeSubarnarekha, Budhabalang, Baitarani, Brahmani, Bansadhara andRushikulya was falling. However, the Subarnarekha was stillflowing above danger level.

However, people taking shelter under makeshift structures on highways were affected as rains and thundershowers lashed several areas of Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Puri and Khurda districts since early hours, official sources said. Around 1.57 lakh people had been evacuated from low-lying areas and shifted to 275 relief camps.

Swayamsevaks at rescue operations at Chitheri (Tamil Nadu Train accident))

A sleepy village (Chitheri) in Tamilnadu-Vellore District which is 90 kms off Chennai went on deaf when two trains, the Chennai Beach-Vellore Cantonment Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit (MEMU) train crashed into the stationary Arakonam-Katpadi passenger from behind while it was waiting at the signal. The impact of the collision is so powerful that three coaches of the stationary train and two of MEMU train were thrown off the track. Around 10 persons were killed and 100 were injured badly.

Despite heavy rains and pitched darkness, nine Swayamsevaks of Arakonam, along with the National Disaster Response Force personnel, Naval personnel from INS Rajali, Special Commando Force plunged into rescue and relief operations immediately.

Fire Guts 51 houses Sewa Bharati comes in rescue

PASIGHAT : Many spent a sleepless night on Wednesday at the Mirmir Charali point (near DCs office) as after a massive fire gutted down 51 houses and shanties.

The fire broke out at around 11.30 pm on Wednesday night and two fire tenders from Pasighat PS and one from neighboring Assam were pressed in service but it was extinguished completely after 15 hours and reportedly dissatisfied public damaged one fire tender.

Seva Bharati volunteers reached the spot and carried out relief activities, they have distributed buckets, groceries and utensils for immediate use.

The local MLA and present Education Minister Bosiram Siram along with DC (Incharge) SC Debnath rushed to the spot and met the victims. Siram granted and handed over one lakh cash to the DC for immediate relief to the victims and further informed that taking serious note the state Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin has assured to provide new fire tender to Pasighat soon. Siram also assured to provide free books and uniforms to 35 students who lost everything in the devastating fire accident.The Home Minister Takar Marde who arrived to Pasighat on Thursday, also visited the spot and announced one lakh rupees as immediate relief.

Meanwhile the District Administration (DA) held an emergency meeting with magistrates, police authorities, DRRO and officers to tackle the situation. DA granted three thousand rupees for each victim besides arranging temporary shelter at Town Club, Pasighat to facilitate the homeless people.

Not only the government, but the non-governmental agencies have also come forward and have been generously contributing their shares. Seva Bharati provided buckets, groceries and utensils and Support India handed over cash five thousands to the DA for the noble cause.

Leh experienced one of the worst cloud bursts on August 2010 leaving devastating impact on the inhabitants. Witnesses to the catastrophe say the roads were inundated with four feet water. There were loss of life and vehicles. Sewa Bharathi was the first organization to swing in to action and initiate relief actions; there was a baitak going on in the affected place on the same day. Ladakh Phanday Tsogspa, a project of Sewa Bharathi in Ladakh region is very popular among the locals for its efforts in flood relief operations. 92 pages of history of Indian independence, stories of unheard freedom fighters and national heroes, history of national flag and national anthem were recorded by the team of 92.7 BIG FM Mangalore for the blind school students. It was a distinct initiative by 92.7 BIG FM team to spread patriotism through the stories of Indian Independence to the students. The audio CD was released by the chief guests on the occasion. The program opened with the lighting of lamp.

Delivering the key note address, Mr. Vijay Prakash appreciated the 92.7 BIG FM team on their initiative which has set a good example to the society and has given a call to take up the social work for the betterment of the society. He also highlighted the importance of donating the eyes which could become the light of life for the blind.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Vijayanath Shetty highlighted the importance of social work which can completely change the working of the society. He congratulated the 92.7 BIG FM team on their successful attempt in spreading a good message on patriotism through the audio CD. He appreciated the work of the trust in running the blind school and its environment which helps the students to learn the new things.

A demo and distribution of the audio CD was followed by the inauguration. RJ Raj of 92.7 BIG FM was felicitated by Mr. Vijayanath Shetty for contributing his voice to the Audio CD. The Roman and Catherine Lobo Blind School is run by Seva Bharathi Trust, Mangalore. The work of 92.7 BIG FM was appreciated by the gathering.

The 2009 October flash floods have been a bane for the villages on the banks of Krishna and Tungabhadra and especially the villages bordering Mahaboobnagar and Kurnool districts. The Villages have completely been either washed away or have been made into junkyards. There have been many efforts from the Not for profits to make the villages livable and rehabilitation projects were taken up. On our part the Grama Bharathi in association with Hindu Temple of Atlanta (HTA) and North America Shirdi Sai temple of Atlanta (NASSTA)with support from Sewa International have taken up on us the initiative for a long term project on Medical aid and awareness as well as build up a series of services that can make the villages self reliant and sustainable.

Community Center

It was decided to have a permanent structure to host sewa activities, a nucleus of developmental programmes in the villages. And so were planned 3 such centers at Kukatanoor, korivipadu Mahaboobnagar district and Sangala at, Kurnool Dist With Financial Aid from with Hindu Temple of Atlanta (HTA) and North America Shirdi Sai temple of Atlanta (NASSTA) and thanks to Sewa International Which made it possible. Each center would be a nucleus of at least 6 villages in and around.

Inauguration of Community center at Kutakanoor:

The Sewa Bhavan was dedicated to the Community by Sri Shyam Kumar Ale Prant Pracharak of RSS and Sri R Nagaraj Hon President Sewa Bharathi. Earlier the Village as a whole got together in performing the rituals and poojas for the new Building. The Village sarpanch Mrs Anasooya lead the way along with her husband while 5 other couples joined them and the rest of the village chanted along with them. The representative from Sewa International Mr Srikant Konda also participated and introduced the Hindu temple of Atlanta and the North America Shirdi Sai temple of Atlanta and thanked them for the support. A Hawan was performed and later in the meeting the children of the Abhyasikas performed cultural activities.

At a later function Sri Buchareddy Secretary read out the district Sewa report of all the activities both Sewa Bharathi and grama Bharathi were doing in Mahaboobnagar District. Sri Nagaraj Honorary President Sewa Bharathi said he was taken back to the difficult days of the Diwseema Uppena (Cyclone) when villages together were washed away in one of the worst cyclones in India. It was thanks to the volunteers and the villagers who stood up to the calamity that we could assemble here.

The Prant Pracharak of RSS Sri Shyam Kumar appreciated the efforts of the villagers and lauded their bravery in leading ahead and building up a new life. He introduce the activities of Sewa bharathi during difficult times including Gujarat and lathore earthquakes, Cyclones in Diwiseema and Odisha as well as the Tsunami.

The villagers thanked the three agencies Hindu temple of Atlanta and the North America Shirdi Sai temple of Atlanta and Sewa International for providing the support to Grama Bharathi to run activities for not only their village but 6 villages around. The Gram Panchayat passed a resolution and thanking letters were to be signed and sent to three organizations.

Over three and half lakh affected and led homeless by floods in 6 districts

In North Lakhimpur alone, more than 65,000 people have been said to have been affected by flood in different villages. This is the official figure and as it is being believed that the number would be much more. The number of people affected in Dhemaji and other districts together has brought the number of flood hit people in the state to over three and half lakhs. So far seven deaths have been reported.

293 out of 423 earthen banks on Assam Rivers crossed expiry period!

As many as 293 out of 423 embankments on Assam Rivers to prevent floods have been reported to have crossed their expiry period. This means that these banks can break down anytime under pressure of the water currents, bringing a threat to millions of people living in the state.

Floods render 1,500 people homeless in Meghalaya

Over 1,500 people were rendered homeless in western parts of Meghalaya as some villages were submerged Wednesday (August 17)) under rising flood waters following incessant rains, officials said. No loss of life was reported.

All major rivers in West Garo Hills district were flowing above the danger mark with flood waters entering many low-lying areas and affecting thousands of people, an official said.

Jinjiram, Ganol and Simsang rivers -- the three major rivers -- were in spate. A major embankment at Garobadha, between Rangatari and Sonamati villages, had been breached, letting in flood waters from Ganol river into low-lying areas on a large scale.

GUWAHATI, Aug 18 – The number of people affected by the current wave of flood in the State has shot up to over 3.26 lakh. The number of districts affected by the flood wave has also shot up to six with the inclusion of Chirang district in the list. Fresh flood waters of the Jiadhal and the Gai River have inundated some new areas today in Dhemaji district.

The current wave has affected 335 villages in 11 revenue circles of the State and led to death of six persons, including the two in Lakhimpur district, one in Sonitpur district and three in Dhemaji district, said the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) sources here.

However, the Dhemaji District Disaster Management Authority (DDDMA) sources told this newspaper that the current wave of flood has taken a toll of four human lives.

According to SDMA sources here, the current wave has affected a crop area of 69,667 hectares and has damaged 297 kutcha houses and 17 RCC bridges and culverts. In all, 16 roads have been damaged by the current wave of flood in Dhemaji district, while four roads in each of Dhubri and Lakhimpur districts, five in Sonitpur district and one in Jorhat district have been damaged by the same wave of flood.

Road communication to a vast area of Dhemaji district, beyond Dhemaji town, is cut off since August 15. Rail communication to the district has also been cut off since the same date, said the DDDMA sources.

Though road communication to Dhemaji town from the rest of the State has now been restored, the same could not be restored between Dhemaji and Silapathar and between Dhemaji and Jonai, said the DDDMA sources.

DDDMA sources told this newspaper that the number of people affected by the current wave of flood has shot up in the district to 1.55 lakh. Likewise, the number of villages affected by flood has also shot up to 246 in the four revenue circles of Dhemaji, Gogamukh, Sisi Borgaon and Jonai in Dhemaji district.

Meanwhile, Brahmaputra at Neamatighat, Dhansiri (South) at Numaligarh and Beki are flowing above the danger level.

A government spokesperson said heavy rains triggered massive flooding in the eastern Dhemaji district, about 500 km from Assam's main city of Guwahati.

"According to preliminary reports, about 40 villages have been hit by floods with an estimated 25,000 people displaced. There are reports of at least seven people swept away by sudden burst of flooding," Dhemaji District Magistrate M.S. Manivannan told journalists.

Flood waters have covered a major portion of the National Highway (NH) 52 in Dhemaji district, cutting off the district from the rest of the country.

Nearly 600 metres of the road have been washed away by flood waters, while a portion of the railway tracks in the district has also been washed away. A road connecting Arunachal Pradesh has also been washed away by flood waters.All important rivers in Dhemaji are flowing over the red mark, inundating several villages and affecting thousands of people.

IAF to rescue flood-hit in Assam

Guwahati, August 16

Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters have been pressed into action to rescue marooned people even as flash floods in Dhemaji district in eastern Assam inundated over 150 villages since yesterday.
Dhemaji Deputy Commissioner MS Manivannan said over 200 persons were rescued in the district by IAF choppers from the villages that were suddenly inundated due to flash floods of the Gai-nadi and several other smaller rivers yesterday. Several hundred people have taken shelter in five relief camps in the district so far.
The swirling Gai-nadi (Gai River) that flows down from Arunachal Pradesh all of a sudden changed course yesterday morning near Sisiborgaon and washed away several houses after damaging the NH-53 as well as the Rangiya-Murkongselek metre gauge railway track.
Eight members of a marooned family were atop a tree for over four hours until the tree along with the flood-hit were swept away by the strong currents.
While a team of the NDRF personnel tried hard to reach out to the marooned persons, but in vain. They were finally washed ashore, the official claimed, refuting initial reports about their death.
Incessant rains in Arunachal Pradesh and eastern Assam had sent several rivers in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Sonitpur overflowing in the past two days. In Dhemaji, the original course of the Gai River was abandoned and the river was flowing through paddy fields along the highway.
Swirling waters of the Brahmajan and Satrang overtopped NH-53 at two spots near Gohpur in Sonitur district in north Assam. Several villages have been inundated by the flood waters of the Brahmajan, Satrang, Kukurjan and Sessa since yesterday, an official source said.

As many as 39 children associated with Disha Prakalp - a rehabilitation centre in Jammu and Kashmir - today visited the rock garden, Chhatbir Zoo and Sukhna Lake as part of their three day trip to the city.

The children, aged between five and seventeen years, are all victims of tragic incidents like the Leh cloudburst, terrorism and the J&K earthquake. The rehabilitation centres are run by the Kashmir unit of Sewa Bharti - a Non-government Organisation.

The children have been invited by the Sharda Sarvhitkari Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 40. The excitement among the children after visiting the rock garden today was palpable. “I loved the laughing mirrors and the aquariums in the rock garden. I had never seen any of these before,” said twelve year old Rigzan Angdu, who was admitted to Disha Prakalp in January this year after losing his family to the Leh cloudburst last year.

Relief work at the Kalka Mail Accident by Sangh volunteers

A tragic accident that happened to the Delhi-bound Kalka Mail on 10 July morning is tragic.

Two general compartments were very badly mangled. We got the information that at least 60 people have died and hundreds injured. What appalled us was that till 4 pm the Railway Accident Relief train had not reached the site of the accident although it was just a 4-hour normal train run time away at Allahabad.

The RSS Swayamsevaks were already at the site of the accident for several hours helping the railwaymen and other security personnel. They were there at the railway station near the dead bodies. They were there in hospitals where the injured have been transported. They were there even in Kanpur attending to the seriously injured. The Swayamsevaks were at the site, the hospitals helping the victims and their relatives. They were even gathering blood donor lists need for blood and other help. The local volunteers were organising relief at the site along with more than hundred Swayamsevaks.

the local head of the organisation, a doctor by profession. He told us that he was busy attending to the injured people in his own hospital as dozens of them had arrived.

most importantly the RSS has a network that can handle all the needs in such situations - doctors, blood donars, helpers, transport, food, security. You name it and you have people in the organisation who can be immediately put to work.

This network of inspired individuals is what the RSS has created as an asset for the country.

They will be there wherever and whenever required. I am reminded of the day after the police crackdown on Baba Ramdev's Satyagraha camp at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. At 5 in the morning on 5 June I saw more than 200 Swayamsevaks at the Jhandewala HQ of the organisation in Delhi. They were to disperse in various directions - to railway stations, hospitals, public parks - to extend help to the victims of the Police brutality. While all the leaders were busy making statements here was a band of young men which was silently scouting the streets of Delhi and helping the victims.

SATURDAY VISIT TO GOPAL DHAM (Sewa bharati): Home for Militancy orphaned, destituted children

On Saturday, I went to a child home (or precisely boys home who don’t have their parents to look after them) named as Gopal Dham. It is situated on Bhopura – Loni Road in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh. Actually I went there to do some for needy so I was carrying some packets of biscuits and donated amount for one time meal for children. Total 90 boys were there from atleast 15 different states of India. Jammu & Kashmir was at number one because 33 boys came from there. They were victim of terrorist attacks and lost their parents. Indian army picked them handed over to Gopal Dham. These boys were of all age group starting from 5 years to 17 years. They study in public school. An electrician and musicians visit there to teach boys to be stand on their own feet.

I came to know that there is no Government aid for this noble cause as this Gopal Dham run by Sewa Bharti (a member organisation of Sangh Pariwar). It manages all the funding through donation only. Ok leave apart the politics. Return to Saturday!!

We distributed the packets to boys but 16 boys politely refused the offering. We got the answer from in-charge of Gopal Dham, that 16 boys are muslims and on Roja (fasting by muslims) as this is the month of Ramadan. Shocked!!!! Muslims boys in a Sangh Pariwar run home!!!!

I think news channel should go there and spread the message of true harmony (not speeches).

Karwar: Following a landslide that caused part of a hillock to collapse at Bolewada near Kadwad, 5 Km from here, five families living beneath the hillock were shifted to a safer place on Monday.

The landslide on Monday took place near a house owned by Sadashiv Mahadev Bongale. However, there was no damage to the house in the incident.

The landslide made people worried in the region as 19 people were killed in a landslide at Zariwada in the same locality on October 2, 2009.

Deputy Commissioner, B N Krishnaiah, visited the spot along with other officials and arranged the shift. He said other families living near the hillock would also be shifted, adding that the hillock, which had been rendered barren with large scale tree-filling and extraction of red clay, has become too fragile. Therefore, it is dangerous to live near it. He also instructed to deploy a home guard personnel at Kadwad as there was possibility of landslide in Kadwad hilly region.

The DC instructed Tahsildar Basavaraj to shift the people, who lost houses during the landslide on October 2, 2009 at Zariwada, to Aasare houses built by Seva Bharathi Pratisthan.

Seva Vibhag of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Bangalore’s Banashankari Unit arranged a free eye testing camp on Sunday June 26th at semi rural area of Gottigere. The camp was attended by nearly 607 villagers who are poor and could not afford entry in to higher hospitals for their check up for their vision related ailments.

Apart from eye testing to diagnose the specific cause and health status of eyes, its mineral-nutrient requirements etc, the camp also had Cataract surgery facility. 44 villagers benifited from Cataract surgery. People beyond the age of 55-60 used to get regular cataract problem, but for these villagers it was a blessing in disguise when they made their visualise the dream of surgery for a free of cost.
For 274 patients with poor vision the spectacles were distributed freely. The camp was organised by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Banashankari Unit along with medical staff of Narayana Nethralaya Bangalore.

Hundreds have to beg for blood

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Devasya from Malabar came to the city for treatment of cancer at the Regional Cancer Centre. But what happened hence should be an eye-opener to the hundreds of people who refuse or hesitate to donate blood.

While any normal person has a platelet count of 1.4 lakh, Devasya’s count went as down to 10,000. The count went on nosediving as he, a stranger to the city, could not find any donor.

�With death haunting him at every step, Devasya had to walk all the way from RCC to Statue, literally begging for blood. Finally, it was some good samaritans at a government office near Statue who went with him to donate blood. Thanks to them, Devasya is still alive.

�Devasya is just one among the hundreds who have to beg for blood, says the Voluntary Blood Donors Society based in Thampanoor. ‘’Most patients from outside the city have a huge problem obtaining blood. Obviously they cannot bring 5-6 donors from their hometown and their only option will be to buy blood from professional donors. It is a common scene to see patients pawn their gold ornaments for blood,’’ said M S Renjith, secretary of the society.

�Those who have gold, pawn them. Those who don’t, end up in tears. The only answer is to create more awareness and to dispel the fears connected with blood donation, say the office-bearers of the Voluntary Blood Donors Society.

�It is under these circumstances that the society has launched a ‘Mission 2012’ so as to make the demand and supply of safe blood to be equal by 2012. They also intend to create at least 50,000 blood donors in the state by December 2012.

�Mission 2012 has the support of various residents’ associations and their apex body, the Federation of Residents Associations, Trivandrum. Apart from FRAT, the NCC, NSS, IMA, KESTKA, Corporation, Police Association, Sathya Sai Seva Sangham, VSSC, Sevabharathi and the BSS will also be backing the campaign.

�What is more, several cine stars, artists and politicians too have promised to campaign for blood donation. It will not be far off when the city will get to see posters of celebrities like Parvathy Omanakuttan, Bhama, Sujatha, G Venugopal, Jagadeesh, Suresh Gopi, V S Achuthanandan, Prithvi Raj, Indrajith, Mallika Sukumaran, Shashi Tharoor and even O Rajagopal urging you to donate blood.

In a meaningful programme on Monday the newly constructed houses has been handed over to the flood victims at Kotnalli village of Guledagudda district of North Karnataka. RSS National Executive Council Member, Senior Pracharak Sri Mai Cha Jayadev ji formally handed over the houses during the dedication ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion Jayadev ji said, “Through various social service schemes and projects, RSS is involved in more than 1.50 lakh Seva activities across the nation. RSS works in all walks of social life, including the rehabilitation of 8 crore Tribal community of the nation. Seva is a divine term and action. RSS is indulged in a silent social transformation by means of Seva activities in its journey of 85 years. Seva Bharati’s work and dedication should be applauded”.

Maid gangraped by NGO owners, 1 held

NEW DELHI: The city reaffirmed its tag of being the crime capital after a young girl from Jharkhand was gangraped by an NGO owner and his two friends in northwest Delhi. The girl, who had come to the city looking for a job, was allegedly drugged and raped by the trio. The incident came to light on June 20 after the victim lodged a complaint with the police.

One of the rapists, Shiv Ram, 40, has been arrested. But the main accused, Baldev and Bamdev, are still on the run, said deputy commissioner of police (northwest) Meenu Choudhary.

What is shocking is all three accused are part of NGOs that claim to fight against exploitation of the downtrodden, particularly migrants from Jharkhand.

Bamdev runs an organization, Jharkhand Nyay Manch, while Shivram runs an NGO, Seva Bharti, in Punjabi Bagh. Baldev is employed here. This NGO too claims to take up the cause of the poor, particularly exploitation of maids from Jharkhand by placement agencies.

The police said, the victim claimed she came to Delhi looking for a job. “The girl said she has been working as a part-time maid in the city since December last year,” a police officer said.

On June 2, the three men called her to Bamdev’s residence under the pretext of some work. All three were drunk at that time. Late in the night, they offered her soft drinks laced with sedatives and she lost consciousness. When she woke up next morning, she had been sexually assaulted.

The trio also threatened her with dire consequences if she complained to the police, a police officer said.

The girl went to church on Monday where she met a relative and confided in her.

“Then she gathered the courage to go to the Rani Bagh police station and lodge a complaint. A medical examination confirmed rape. We have arrested Shiv Ram. The other two are absconding. A case of rape and criminal intimidation has been lodged,” said a senior police officer.

The influence of RSS associated organisations and their growing service activities has led Christian missionaries and Congress leaders to panick so much that they have started misleading people by floating fake organisations. The Congress-Christian combine formed a fake Sewa Bharati in Delhi and announced the holding of a public function under its banner on September 18. But it was caught before it could cause any damage to the reputation of the original Sewa Bharati. It is a fact that Sewa Bharati, Delhi has earned a good respect among people living in slum and J.J. clusters with its service activities as well as with the programmes to uplift weaker section of the society. Such welfare activities have made people aware enough to stop entry of Christian missionaries in their localities.

The missionary activists, with the help of some Congress leaders, formed an organisation, Sewa Bharati Sanstha, Delhi. Over 95 per cent its office bearers are Christians and the remaining are local Congress leaders. They published an advertisement in several newspapers regarding a function at Punjabi Bagh stadium on September 18. Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, Congress leaders Oskar Fernandes, Dr Karna Singh, Sajjan Kumar, Sandip Dikshit and film actor turned politician Govinda were scheduled to participate in the function.

The event alerted Sewa Bharati activists. They staged a massive protest in Punjabi Bagh on September 18. Following the protest none of these Congress leaders turned up. Sewa Bharati has also initiated legal action against the fraud organisation.

Today afternoon, as i was turning few pages on a book, i noticed a card which was present. I would not call it as an identity card, however it had a number which recognized that i was a student and authorized me to take tuition classes.

Having indulged in all sorts of fun activities during college days, it was time for me to drawn a line and prepare myself for the exams. In this encounter a good friend of mine introduced me to SEVA BHARATHI. Seva Bharathi was a social service organization which used to conduct tuition classes for students. Since my regular tution master had to take some exams and he could not coach me regularly, i decided to join Seva Bharathi. It was voluntary service that many people involved in the organization were doing. They primarily identified good lecturers from colleges and invited them to take tuition classes, this was to be done as part of the contribution to the society as the lecturers were not paid for taking classes and the fees charges for an individual if i remember was Rs 100. Classes were conducted in the evenings and on Sunday's it would go on from early in the morning to late in the afternoon. Many students were getting benefits from the trust as the fees charged was economical.

Twice every week, we had to recite a motivational poem which was composed by a famous person, sorry i do not know the name, but the poem itself had so much meaning in it, till today i recall how it was being sung by everyone present in the class. It goes like this.

He then gave an update on various approaches being implemented to improve health service delivery for the urban poor. Coordination committees are working to develop linkages among various stakeholders including health department, urban development department, ICDS, municipal bodies, NGOs, community based organisations (CBOs) and private providers for building up synergy in several activities that improves the quality of services. A mobile gynaecological clinic is operational in partnership with private doctors on contractual basis. They provide regular ANC check-up, Hb and urine test, TT and IFA distribution through 20 camps at 10 locations in a month. Around 20 private nursing homes have been accredited for extending services under Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY). Two new UHCs are operational through partnership of District Health Department with two local NGOs - Nivedita Kalyan Samiti and Sewa Bharti.
Dr Ohri committed the involvement of the health department towards further strengthening community linkages through link workers or USHA.

Sewa Bharati: Gram Vikas project seeks public help

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has been working for the upliftment of the Society with various activities and one such project is Gram Vikas.
We wish each Gram (Village) should be free from alcohoic or drug addictions, crimes (if at all, it should be settled at village level), untouchability, lack of primary education, unemployment, dependency, unhygienic condition etc. Here, the Vikas is not the term given for the development, as generally used for the facility or infrastructure available. Vikas means people participation in the all-round development, such as social harmony, self sufficient in all aspects – ie basic education, health facility, employment, panchayats etc.
Few villages had taken up as pilot projects few years ago and are now showing the result. To name a few in Karnataka -

‘Satyagraha’ against corruption

In support of a ‘satyagraha’ against corruption and black money being led by yoga guru Swami Ramdev from New Delhi, local units of the Patanjali Yog Samiti and the Bharat Swabhiman Trust along with several social, religious and other organisations of the city started a similar agitation near the Fire Brigade Station on the Mall Road here today.
The ‘satyagraha’ here was also attended by members of NGOs and other organisations, including the Bathinda Vikas Manch, the Sewa Bharti, the Vishav Hindu Parishad, the Yog Sewa Samiti, the Beopar Mandal, the Inner Wheel Club, the Parivar Welfare Society and the All India Anti-corruption Association, Punjab.
Some persons also observed fast while participating in the agitation for eradicating corruption from the country and bringing back black money from the foreign banks to India.
President of the local unit of the Patanjali Yog Samiti Ravinder Kumar thanked the leaders and members of the organisations for participating in the ‘satyagraha’.

Miracle of SHGs in Tamil nadu: Sewa Bharati re-establishes Shanthi, Kalarani, Anitha

In the suburbs of Nagerkovil town there is a small village called Sarakkalvilai, wherein one Shanthi aged 23 years who is a widow having a three-year-old female child happens to be the daughter of a member by name Bhathirakali belonging to Buvaneswari SHG.

The SHG members took into consideration the future of Shanthi in one of their weekly meetings and decided to arrange for her remarriage. Everything was planned and executed in a fantastic way. Shanthi entered a new life with an understanding partner Somalingaom. The SHGs funded and organised the marriage function. The people of the village were astonished by this activity of the SHG and extended all their support. During the visit of the Sewa Bharati office-bearer the mother of Shanthi, Smt Bathirakali, was in tears while describing the incident.

In a village called Aramannam near Kulasekaram the incident was even more appalling. One widow lived in Aramannam working as an agriculture coolie and her two adolescent daughters, namely Kalarani and Anitha, worked in a private firm in Andhra Pradesh. She died of cancer leaving behind the two daughters as orphans after spending all her earnings on her treatment. The two daughters who came to take care of their mother in the hospital were left with nothing but the corpse of their mother. There was nobody to help even for the funeral. The Sewa Bharati SHG members took the initiative and arranged for the funeral after performing all the last rites. They arranged for a safe place for their livelihood with suitable jobs, and took all initiatives to arrange for their marriages. One Panchayet member of the locality took the lead and with the generous contributions from all the SHGs across the District and various other organisations the marriage of Kalarani was arranged with Iyappan.

Helping the needy is another important social change that is happening almost everyday in the district through SHGs. Financial assistance for the sick persons, accident victims, victims of calamities like fire accidents, have become a normal routine for the SHGs.
